Crafting a stimulating and satisfying early retirement lifestyle doesn't just happen - it takes a lot of behind the scenes time and energy. I spend a considerable amount of time planning out our travel schedule and our at-home schedule, which is much of what you see scattered around my computer in the photo. From left to right, in a semi-orderly circular fashion, here's what balls are in the air this morning:
- OLLI college catalogs - I check these daily to see what classes we have time and interest in attending.
- Wild Words from Wild Women calendar - I have no clue what day it is until I sit down and take a look at my funny little daily calendar, a gift last Christmas from my husband. Today's quote: "Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement."
- Small notebook I use to track my exercise routine and weight. I'm a bit unhappy with this notebook at the moment - the trend lines appear to be heading in the wrong direction!
- My daily spend notebook, which I use to track all of our transactions. I make one checkmark when I've transferred the entry over to our budget spreadsheet, and a second checkmark when the transaction has cleared the appropriate account.
- Our ballroom dance studio's monthly group lesson schedule.
- A timer for the lemon squares currently baking in the oven. These are the best lemon squares ever I swear. I modified the recipe slightly to increase the amount of lemon filling, which made a world of difference. Mike loves it when there are baked goods either on the counter or in the freezer to pack in the sack lunch he takes to the college, so I do my best to accommodate. (See recipe below)
- A flyer for Spellbound with Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman, this week's free classic film showing at OLLI.
- A scrap of paper reminding me today is the last day to order a photo book online at Shutterfly in order to receive a 50% discount. I really need to hurry up and finish my photo book on our recent trip to China!
- Next month's read for one of my three book clubs (Peace Like a River by Leif Enger in case your curious). I got it free from the library of course.
- Scraps of paper listing interesting things to do in Encinitas, Palm Springs and Malibu, the next three locations we'll be taking our trailer to.
- A cruise ship brochure. I'm always on the lookout for a good deal . . .
- Our earthquake policy renewal. It went up - a lot - and I need to chat with my agent to discuss possible alternatives.
- A TravelZoo dining voucher for a winery in Temecula that we'll be visiting during our upcoming Encinitas trip. It's out as a reminder that I need to call and make reservations. I am not a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants person - I make reservations for everything.
I manage our activities via my online Google calendar. Since it resides "in the clouds," I can share it electronically with Mike, and vice versa. It provides much of the functionality I used to utilize at my job via Microsoft's Outlook, or at least as much as I need to keep our little retired household of two moving along.
If I look at this all from the perspective of my pre-early retirement office routine, not much has really changed. The items I'm handling are slightly different than before, but the ongoing initiation, organization and timeline demands are pretty similar. I very much enjoyed organizing my schedule and staying on top of my projects at work, and I still enjoy doing the same in retirement here at home. I spend about an hour at my desk in the morning doing budget entries, organizing our calendar and reading up on my favorite blogs, and then again for another hour or so in the evening catching up on my email and doing future travel planning.

Best Lemon Squares Ever
6 Tbl butter
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup all purpose flour
--------------
3 eggs
1 & 1/8 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp finely shredded lemon peel
4 & 1/2 Tbl freshly squeezed lemon juice
3 Tbl all purpose flour
3/8 tsp baking powder
Preheat oven to 350. Grease an 8x8x2 inch baking pan. For cookie base, in mixer, beat butter on medium speed of electric mixer for 30 seconds. Add 1/4 cup sugar and salt; beat till fluffy. Stir in 1 cup flour. Pat into bottom of pan. Bake in oven about 15 minutes or till slightly and lightly browned around edges.
Meanwhile, beat eggs till mixed, just a few seconds. Add 1 & 1/8 cup sugar, lemon peel, lemon juice, 3 TBL flour and baking powder; beat about 3 minutes or till slightly thickened. Pour over above baked layer. Bake in oven for 25 minutes, till lightly browned and just set in center. Watch carefully at the end so you do not overcook!
Cool completely. Cut into squares and top with sifted powdered sugar if desired. Makes about 16 - 20 squares, depending on how you decide to cut them.
These keep for about 3 days with minimal loss of texture, and they also freeze beautifully for later enjoyment.

good morning!
ReplyDeletejust a quick comment for today - you mentioned cruises and good deals so i wondered if you have heard of "repositioning cruises"? A friend mentioned it to us and they sound perfect for travellers on a budget! Google it and you'll find lots of info. Basically cruise ships head to warmer climates in the off seasons so for example, you can catch a Caribbean ship heading north/east to England or the Mediterranean in the spring for A LOT less money. they're going anyway so why not go full of paying passengers, right?! win win.

oh, i'm ignoring that recipe. my hips however, are not! ;o)
Hi Ellen. The cruise I have my eye on for next fall actually happens to be a repositioning cruise - from Canada down to Florida. I'm taking the strategy of holding off booking it until 60-90 days out, which is the point at which rates will take their final drop if there is still unsold inventory. There is a website that makes it easy to track these, www.vacationstogo.com. The link to the last minute cruise inventory sales is on the upper left, labeled "90-Day Ticker." Take a look - you might find something to good to pass up!
Deletewowza, thank you! i still have to talk the old guy i married into it but he can't pass up a good deal either, thankfully! Good luck with your hunt for a deal!
DeleteI'm retired, he's not. He has maybe 2 more years to go -- I have more activities to track, and I am also the social planner for BOTH of us, so I, too have a MESSY DESK!! But I do know where it all is.I am just now getting into GOOGLE calendar, but also seem to be very attached to my small paper day planner.. My husband does have just a 3 1/2 day work week, so we do have lots going on in the almost-4 days off each week.I try to balance our quiet at home time with social stuff.
ReplyDeleteI track our activities in the planner and online fir now, I spend tie every day browsing the web for travel and leisure ideas on a bargain... and like you, I am a PLANNER in general, with a few months always booked out ahead of time.. we are making plans for summer right now, but I do wait for last min, deals to book..
I have great energy in the mornings, not so much at night, so I save evenings for reading my book club book,s writing, and watching fave shows like Gray's anatomy..
I used to use Cruise Compete to get travel quotes but it always turned out that vacationstogo.com ended up with the LOWEST overall prices so our last few cruises have been with them.I see one in January out of New Orleans to West.Carribean for a little over 300 / for 7 nights!! for Az. residents!!
have not been able to get my spouse interested in RV ing at all, but we have a cabin in Northern Az. that is a great getaway and is our hoe base for hikes and nature walks, etc.. I love reading your site for tips on bargains, etc, and I scour the web when we want to visit the coast--we do like drive trips in California and hope to get to the Pacific Northwest this year..
Anyway--LOVE your blog-- and since I love to cook too,I'll be making those lemon bars this weekend!!
Really enjoyed your energetic response . . . hmm, maybe a kindered spirit?
DeleteIt took me a bit as well to realign from a daily planner over to an online organizer like Google calendar, but I'm totally onboard now. One of the really nice features is that you can make certain things "reoccurring" like regular activities, birthdays and anniversaries. The ability to "share" is also tremendous. I keep detailed records of where we will be during our many trips, including contact information. Because I've electronically "shared" my calendar with both of our daughters, they always have access to where we are should there ever be need to reach us.
I am intrigued by your cabin . . . I have a nice long trip through the southwest penciled in for April of 2014. I may be back to ask for some suggestions on what parks we might want to visit in northern Arizona during our trip.
Please let me know how you found the lemon bars . . . remember the key is not to overcook. The goal is to have the lemon filling be similar in texture to the filling in a lemon meringue pie. :-)
Not quite awake yet-- just got back from Las Vegas last night! Excuse messy typos in previous comment!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGot it, no worries!
DeleteI have two desks in my office. One holds a computer, a dozen different ham radios, plus various routers and cable modems. The other desk has another computer, stacks of files for the blog, Bible study materials, business cards, a calculator, and sticky notes about errands and tasks. A credenza next to that has two printers, a music stand for guitar music, and a file for future RV trips.
ReplyDeleteLike you I use Google Calendar for overall planning, plus a 10 year old calendar program for my daily and on-going to-do list.
Without a rather high level of organization I wouldn't get much done. By the way, your desk does not look messy!
Hmm, what does it say about me that I really enjoyed hearing about your "system?"
DeleteI keep a file box for RV trips also. I have mine labeled by city, and they are tremendously helpful when we plan a return trip somewhere. One of the things Mike and I do upon arrival at a new campground or RV Park is to walk the grounds with a map, and mark the sites we really like. I then reference this map when planning future trips. Some people aren't fussy about where they stay, but having something to look at is really important to me, so that's generally what I'm looking for when doing a "scan."
Bob and Betty could probably tell you more about RV parks in Arizona since they are now official RV-ers. For the past 15 years we have enjoyed the quiet beauty and seclusion of the Pine-Strawberry area of arizona but it really is..quiet! Many lakes, hikes, etc. if you love nature. There are mountain towns such as Jerome, Prescott, with more to do/see (besides pine trees!!) And of course, Canyon de Chelly, Grand Canyon,Bisbee,Sierra Vista!!
DeleteI don't think your desk was messy either!
I have a post coming up on Monday about a quick RV trip to a beautiful state park in Cottonwood, AZ. It is close to Jerome and Sedona. I also strongly recommend Fools Hollow State Park in Show Low. The RV park is very nice.
DeleteLike you, Tamara, we walk around an RV park and make note of the good sites for future stays. I bought a Camp Journal that allows us to write a detailed report of every place we stay. This gives us a permanent record of each trip and helps us remember the places we'd like to revisit.
I keep a journal as well, and it is incredibly useful. It contains an entry for every RV trip we've ever taken, with notes like driving distance and time, what site we stayed in, what site(s) we should consider next time, what we ate, what we did, how certain trailer components work, and most importantly - is there or is there not an easy-in, easy-out Starbucks along the way?!?
